Registering a supplement in the UAE: what to prepare first
- Published
The UAE has become one of the most attractive markets for brands that want to sell supplements internationally. Consumers are health-conscious, retail is strong and premium positioning works well. But UAE supplement registration is a document-heavy process, and most delays we see come from brands that started the application before they had everything in place.
Preparation is the whole game here. If your file is complete, consistent and backed by the right local partner, the process tends to move. If any piece is missing, it stops.
Who regulates supplements in the UAE
Health supplements in the UAE are registered through the Emirates Drug Establishment, known as the EDE. The EDE took over regulation of medical products, including health supplements, from the Ministry of Health and Prevention.
Classification matters. A product presented as a health supplement follows one route, while a product presented as a food may be handled under food rules. How your product is positioned, what it contains and what it claims all feed into that decision, so settle it before you assemble anything else.
Start with a local partner
Overseas brands usually cannot register a product on their own. You will typically need a UAE-based company, such as a licensed importer, distributor or authorized local agent, to hold or support the registration.
Choose that partner carefully, because they become the face of your brand to the regulator. They will submit and manage your file, handle correspondence with the authority and often hold the registration in the market. Ask how many supplement registrations they have handled, how they share updates and what happens to the registration if the relationship ends.
Agree on ownership before you file
That last question deserves its own conversation. If your distributor holds the registration and you later change partners, moving the product can mean starting again. Clarify ownership and transfer terms in writing at the beginning.
The documents your UAE supplement registration file needs
A complete UAE supplement registration file draws on information most brands already have, but rarely in one place. Before you file, gather:
- The full formula. Every active ingredient and excipient, with exact quantities per serve, plus the intended use, recommended dose and pack size.
- Certificates of analysis. Recent results from a reliable laboratory for the finished product, showing it meets its specification.
- Stability data. Evidence that the product holds its stated content through its shelf life, under relevant storage conditions.
- Manufacturing information. Details of the manufacturing site, its good manufacturing practice status and its quality control procedures.
- Safety information. Precautions, contraindications and any known adverse effects for the ingredients.
- Market status documents. Evidence that the product is legally sold in its country of origin is commonly requested for imported products.
- Label artwork. The proposed label, including Arabic text, matching the formula and claims in the file.
Each of these documents has to agree with the others. A dose in the formula that differs from the dose on the label is the kind of mismatch that sends a file back.
Check dates as well. Certificates of analysis and manufacturing certificates that are close to expiry can be questioned, and a certificate that lapses mid-review may need replacing. Pull fresh copies where you can, and keep a simple index that lists every document, its issue date and its expiry.
Translations deserve the same care. If any supporting document needs to be provided in Arabic, use a qualified translator and keep the terminology consistent with your label.
Getting the label right before submission
The UAE label must match the registration details, and Arabic text is expected, usually alongside English. Some brands print a dedicated UAE pack. Others use an approved Arabic sticker over an existing pack.
Either way, the label needs ingredient quantities, directions, warnings, batch and expiry details, storage conditions and manufacturer and origin information. Claims should be conservative and consistent with what you have submitted.
We usually advise brands to prepare UAE artwork in parallel with the rest of the file. Waiting until registration is underway often adds weeks.
Ingredients and claims to check early
Dietary supplement legal requirements in the UAE do not always match those in Australia or the US. Some ingredients that are common elsewhere may be restricted, limited or assessed more closely, and certain claims may not be accepted.
Before you file, review each ingredient and dose against current UAE expectations, and review each claim for anything that sounds medicinal. Products with botanicals, high-dose vitamins or performance-oriented ingredients deserve particular attention.
Fitting the UAE into a global plan
For most brands, the UAE is a second or third market, not the first. That is an advantage. If you already sell in Australia or the US, much of your evidence, testing and manufacturing documentation can be reused, provided it is current and consistent.
Global supplement compliance works best when you build a core dossier once and adapt it for each market. Supplement market entry in the UAE then becomes a matter of local partnership, translation and targeted review, rather than starting from scratch.
Prepared files move faster
Realistic timelines help too. Even a clean file can attract questions, and each round of questions adds time. Build that into your launch plan rather than promising retailers a date that depends on a perfect review.
Registration processes everywhere reward organization, and the UAE is no exception. A complete, consistent file submitted through a capable local partner gives your product the best chance of moving through without unnecessary back and forth.
The brands that struggle are rarely the ones with difficult products. They are the ones that filed first and prepared second. Reverse that order and UAE supplement registration becomes a manageable project rather than an open-ended wait.
